Charminar, an elegant structure of Hyderabad, is a fine example of Cazia style of architecture. It was built by Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah in 1591. The Islamic architectural splendor is one of the major landmarks of Hyderabad. It is a must-watch on a visit to Hyderabad. The structure looks solid from far off but as you move towards it, it seems like an elwegant monument proclaiming its architectural beauty in all its dignity. Apart from being a major attraction of the city, Charminar has now become a brand name.
The four minarets of Charminar command the landscape for miles. Each of these minarets is above 55 meters in height. The structure is square, each side measuring 100 feet, with a central pointed high arch at the center. The Charminar market had some 14,000 shops, a unique conglomeration of a grand oriental bazaar. Near the Charminar stand four magnificent arches called Char Kaman, which served as the gateway to the Zilu Khana (ante chamber) of the royal palace.
Around the Charminar, there are several shops that sell pearl and perfume that form major attraction of the city. Move around a little to smell the fragrances of Persia, scents of Saudi Arabia and the attars of Afghanistan.
On the western side of the Charminar fort, a mosque has been constructed. If you wish to reach upto the top of the fort, you will have to climb as many as 149 stairs. Once you reach the top of the fort, feel the air under the open sky. Enjoy the glimpse of the life below. The life below is active and energetic while at the top the environ is peaceful and quiet. From an elevated height, the Hyderabad city seems beautiful. It seems simply spectacular.
